September 15, 201213 yr We have recently bought the rectory at Whitton Tower, Rothbury. You posted details of the sale back in March 2012. You were curious about why the Pele Tower was not part of the sale. I can clear up the mystery for you. The whole building that you can see in the pictures you posted is known as Whitton Tower. Within the grounds is also a Coach House and now, a new house called the Pine Trees, which was built about 25 years ago in what was the old Kitchen Garden. Whitton Tower was split into two separate residences in the late 1980s and sold off separately as The Pele Tower and The Rectory. The Rectory is the only one that was sold this year. The Pele Tower still belongs to owners who bought it in the late 80s. Until recently they let part of it out as holiday accommodation. You can still see some pictures of it at www.thepeletower.com I can send you the map from the land registry if you're interested. This shows where the building is split into two. I'm very happy to answer any questions about the building that I can. We feel extremely privileged at being able to live in such a magnificent house, even if we don't have the old Pele Tower itself. We are currently setting up a website for Whitton Tower and would very much like to be able to show the two postcards that you posted on the forum. Would that be OK? Our contact information can be found at www.whittontower.com. Isabelle and John
September 16, 201213 yr Dear Isabelle & John, Thank you for clearing this matter up. Someone I know had suggested this, but I was not able to verify it. Maybe you can add the actual tower to your portfolio at some stage. And yes, you are welcome to use copies of the postcards on your website. If you want better copies, I can re-scan them for you, and send them via e-mail to you. Do let me know when everything has been set up - I would be pleased to see it. Many thanksAndrew
August 10, 201411 yr I was a child of 4 or 5 convalescing at Whitton Towers in 1952-53. I found it terrifying as there was a myxomatosis outbreak which killed all the rabbits in a most gruesome way. We went on daily walks past dying rabbits with their eyes bulging. I've never forgotten it and I'm 67 now! I still have the nativity scene that some kind local lady gave me at Christmas 1952. I treasure it.
August 21, 201411 yr It's interesting to hear the story of someone who was there all those years ago. Thank you Brenda for sharing that - both the good and the bad. And to Isabelle and John - I have looked at your website. I hope you do not mind me posting the link here.http://www.whittontower.com/
