This is a picture of a Knucker Dragon

The thing about Dragon legends is that for such an obviously mythical creature, it is so widespread across the world. Where did the idea of dragons originate? What was the original inspiration? Legends tend to travel with man, we see this with Celtic myth and the common threads that have developed in the folklore of the different Celtic regions. So it is reasonable to assume that since dragon legends are so widespread and varied across different races across the world, that they are very very ancient.

ALL though the time that dragons first appeared in myths isn't known for sure, they can be traced back as far as approximately 4000 B.C. Dragons are said to have been able to live almost anywhere, depending on the type of dragon mentioned. Their habitats range from the center of the earth to the middle of the ocean. They could also be found in caves, fire, or anywhere dark and damp

Other tales about dragons are more about their toes then the dragons themselves. How many toes a dragon has is quiet significant. Many different kinds of dragons are said to have 3 toes. The 4 toed dragons are said to be the earth dragons. But the 5 toed dragons are the most respected of all. Only a king or a high noble had the privilege of wearing a picture of the 5 toed dragon. In ancient times if a peasant was seen wearing the symbol of the 5 toed dragon, he would immediately be put to death.

I think that in medieval terms, if you flew the dragon banner it meant that the normal rules of engagement were abandoned, and it was a declaration that no mercy was to be given. I read somewhere too that if it said 'here be dragons' on a medieval map, it simply meant that this was a very dangerous place to be, and that you should be on your guard.

Did you know that the Welsh Dragon has a link to Arthurian legend? Apparently Merlin had a vision of the Red Welsh Dragon overcoming the invading white dragon of the Saxons and so the flag symbolises the hope that the Welsh would eventually overcome the English!

The Welsh Dragon (known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch 'the red dragon', pronounced [ə ˈðraiɡ ˈɡox]) appears on the national Flag of Wales (the flag itself is also called "Y Ddraig Goch"post-33-1256180353_thumb.png

Merlin used his great visionary powers and attributed the structural problem to a subterranean pool in which lived a red and a white dragon. The meaning of this, according to Merlin, was that the red dragon represented the Britons, and the white dragon, the Saxons. The dragons fought, with the white dragon having the best of it, at first, but then the red dragon drove the white one back. The meaning was clear. Merlin prophesied that Vortigern would be slain and followed on the throne by Ambrosius Aurelianus, then Uther, then a greater leader, Arthur. It would fall to him to push the Saxons back.

Thanks for that, the best explanation I've seen.
