August 14, 200422 yr Im looking for some pic's of Bodiams gatehouse and entryway -Particularly the portculis and stonework surrounding it. I like the way its done at Bodiam and have pretty much decided to model mine after it. I have a couple pics aleady so I don't need the ordinary frontal shot.
August 14, 200422 yr Can I ask a stupid question? too bad, I'm going to anyway... With a place like Bodiam or Hemyock, how do you build the structure so it can be in the moat without flooding mold etc? I totally know I am missing something on this....
August 15, 200422 yr Author Bodiam not a castle? ok. then.... technically, neither is Castle Duncan! Ok, so then what is it? In any case, im just looking for a shot of the portculis aarea of that large stone "unofficial" thing that resembles (but isnt) a castle that they refer to as "Bodiam c_ _ _ _ _ _ ". Just teasing.
August 15, 200422 yr Admin Yes Castle Duncan is technically a true castle due to the reasons it's being built, sorry but gotcha on that one! :D Andrew would be better at describing Bodiam then I. It was built after other castles were needed and never finished. It also never took a attack nor was ever fired upon. It's still a castle to me no matter what and one of the better layed out ones too. Being a castle purist and a lover of castles is hard at times
August 15, 200422 yr Actually, I was under the impression that Bodiam was built for defense somewhere in the 1300s......is this info wrong?
August 15, 200422 yr Admin I'm not sure about the date of construction with out further research but I've read the walls and other items are not as thick as most that came before.
August 15, 200422 yr Author Iwas making reference to the fact that its not built, so... WHERES THE BEEF??What? is there some aauthoritty that determines what classifies as being a castle? (it is not a castle. YES it is! NO is not! uh-huh! nah-uhh! Is TOO! Is NOT!... )
August 15, 200422 yr ok...so back to original question.....castles that are right smack in the moat...like bodiam ...leeds...and others....are they in the moat or just appearing to have a submerged "basement" ? If I had to guess I'd say its built on a manmade "island"? But, how do you keep the water from the castle buildings and what about flooding?
August 16, 200422 yr May I suggest that we continue this topic of conversation in a thread devoted to Bodiam, so that new members can locate the information with greater ease. Now, if someone would just hold the door open whilst I help Duncan carry the load across, that would be useful. Many thanksAndrew
