Please bear in mind that this is a man made additive that is not found in home made soap.

Scientists Say Shampoo Ingredient Could Cause Memory Loss

KOCO ChannelOklahoma.com

Although most people wash their hair once a day, few know that what's inside their shampoo may cause brain damage.

Eyewitness News 5's Jessica Schambach recently examined a government-funded research project that is attempting to gauge the effects of a chemical commonly found in a number of personal hygiene products.

DEA -- or diethanolamine -- is the ingredient that causes bubbles to form in soap, bubble bath and shampoo. Researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health say the common ingredient could cause memory loss.

According to a researcher at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, the substance is in almost any soap product that can be found on store shelves.

"It's a lathering agent," Dr. Kenneth Hensley said. "It helps to make soap soluble so that it will wash the dirt off and get if off your skin."

But new research suggests that the chemical also seeps through the skin and robs the brain of its ability to generate memory cells.

Researchers who have tested the chemical on mice say they have uncovered evidence that DEA may block the brain from absorbing choline.

"Choline is an essential nutrient, and it's necessary for brain function and for many purposes," said Hensley. "Depleting the body of choline would be bad for your health, but in humans that would be extraordinarily hard to do in my opinion."

Hensley said it is too early to tell if the effects of DEA would ever be harmful to humans. Lead researchers at the University of North Carolina concur, saying that the impact on adults would be minimal if findings from their research on mice were proved correct.

Researchers remain concerned about the effect that DEA could have on a baby's brain during pregnancy. The DEA project is continuing to look into possible negative effects on fetuses.

You find good recipes for soap and shampoos online...or ask Meg and Galla real nice and I'm sure they tell you their secrets! :wink3.gif:

The soap recipe I have for shampoo is in bar form. Which sound hard to wash your hair with. But in reality it is very easy and convenient to use. I have made it on request for older folks because it has a nurturing effect on the skin instead of drying it out like most shampoos do. And as an added benefit you can make it any fragrance you like.

After a while of using homemade my hair becomes so shiny and soft, that I always hate when I do not have time to make more.

Agreed...homemade is sooooo much better for you (and the environment too!) Bar shampoo is also great (and easy) -especially for lots of camping. Very economical just the same. Will have to see if I have any recipes around, many are still packed... :(

Glass cleaner recipes,

What I make and use the most. I have not bought windex or any other window cleaner since finding this recipe.

½ Cup Ammonia

1 Pint Rubbing Alcohol

1 Teaspoon Dawn Dishsoap

water

Empty Gallon milk container and rinse well.

Pour ingredients into container then top off with water for storage.

Transfer what you need into a spray bottle.

Shake before first use so the smell of the ammonia is gone.

This cleaner will also work around the house and clean most kitchen surfaces.

-----------------------------------------------------

Not tried these but suspect they work also

1/3 rubbing alcohol,

a few drops of Dawn Dishsoap,

and the rest water.

==============================

Glass and kitchen cleaner

1 cup rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol

1 cup water

1 tablespoon white vinegar

Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) evaporates, and leaves no residue.

Save all that bother, it's the vinegar that works best, and the smell of it dissipates pretty quickly. Water it down a bit to save on the cost, but we 1/4 fill a small plant sprayer with vinegar, top up with water, spray on and wipe dry......best window cleaner available....it also helps keep flies away and is good for cleaning baths, kitchen worktops and anything else that comes to mind.

Ace use for vinegar is on greasy frying pans or deep fat fryers when you are changing the oil. Just empty out the oil, pour in some raw vinegar, wipe round, dry, and put in your new oil.

I agree vinegar works for most cleaning Jobs around the house but for glass its not as good as the recipe I use and I have used straight or diluted vinegar before.

With the ammonia recipe there is No streaking, the alcohol makes it dry quickly and helps eliminate streaking and the drop of Dawn keeps the cleaning solution on the glass till it can be dried.

Another item about cleaning glass, do not use news paper to dry with, the new soy inks will leave a bigger mess then the one you had.

And it also comes in handy when you have fish and chips :laughlong.gif:
