November 17, 200322 yr Hey Check Out My Shield I just finished painting a shield I purchased a while back, and I have a picture of myself with it on my profile page. Please excuse the quality, I had to use our cheap-o web came as the digital camera was rendered useless by my four year old son. The coat of arms on the shield has nothing to do with my family... except that my wife really liked the winged wolf, and I’ve always liked heraldic eagles (that’s “tribal chickens” for all you tattoo artists out there). (That helm was made by the good people at McKenzie-Smith.) --David
November 18, 200322 yr Admin I'd like to see it, can we have a link pretty please?? Oh if you want to the Gallery is working now so images can be uploaded also to there.
November 18, 200322 yr Admin :blush2: missed it. The shield looks great!Did you make the templates for the Griffins and the Wolf? What paint did you use and was it done with air brush or brush?
November 18, 200322 yr Author I sketched the charges on my drawing pad, then cut them out. I used the cut outs to trace the images on the shield so they would all be the same size, and used the drawings as a guide while I painted the details. I used brushes with water based craft paint, except for the background, which is regular house paint on primer, then I sprayed on a matte sealer. The shield is made of plywood, and I bought it from an on-line armorer. However, I've been thinking about making them myself, but I have no idea how to bend wood to get such a smooth convex. Any guidance would be appreciated. Oh, I forgot to provide the arms in heraldic discription: Gules a winged wolf rampant or, a chief sable and three eagles in chief argent. David
November 19, 200322 yr Admin That was a good idea and it worked very well too, I'll have to remember that trick. How thick is the plywood?I've got some fairly heavy pieces stacked against a wall that got wet and they've got a nice bend in them, hmmmmm.Other then a steam chamber I guess soaking the plywood pretty well, laying it out flat, then putting blocks on the outer edges and a weight in the middle might work. I'd not over do the weight though, it only took being slanted against my wall to bend these.I think I'd cut the pattern first. Looks good!
November 20, 200322 yr Author Great suggestions, Duncan. Now all I have to do is find something large enough to soak the plywood in. Watch out Home Depot  The ply for that shield was 1/2". -David
