BOOK REVIEW AND LISTS

  1. Started by AJR,

This small book of 78 pages is a "must have" for those who want to investigate the fortifications of Dorset. Now only available second hand, but worth having.

This is a great book, published by Frances Lincoln Ltd in 2009. I've no idea why I've not come across it before. I found it for sale on Amazon, and snapped up the bargain. There are lots of pictures, even of the lesser known sites, which provides the main interest for me. If you come across a copy, and have an interest in the castles of Northumberland, it's a "must have".

  3. Started by AJR,

I recently purchased original copies of four of Sir Walter Scott's books (1886-87) for a very good price, and have attached scans of the frontispieces in the relevant castle posting (But here also for ease of reference). They are Loch Leven Castle, from "The Abbot". Kenilworth Castle, from "Kenilworth". The Tower of London, from "The Fortunes of Nigel". Peveril Castle, from "Peveril of the Peak".

This one is aimed at Gordon, but if anyone else can assist, then please do. Before I consider buying this tome (or any prints from it), can you tell me what the prints are like. I've seen the whole two volumes for sale at £135, but individual prints at £20. There are two of Buittle Place in Dumfries and Galloway, and another of Caerlaverock, but I've no idea what they look like. Can you help here? Thanks Andrew

Just purchased a first edition copy of his book, for a reasonable price on e-bay. A great little hardback book from which I hope to find many gems of information.

In response to David's 'bookshelf', here's a reposting of some of my books which I'd originally posted elsewhere. Other folks had added to this list, I've reposted only my own entries. Please add your own recommendations if you have a book or series of books worth a mention. David Macgibbon, Thomas Ross, The Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland, Mercat Press,1977, facsimilie edition of 19thc originals. ISBN 0901824 186. 5 huge volumes packed with detailed descriptions and architectural drawings of hundreds of Scottish castles, with added data on specific items such as collegiate churches, sundials, town houses..... Lenghty data on contracted masons, Royal…

  7. Started by AJR,

This series of 41 volumes is the modern-day equivalent of the Domesday Book, covering 10,000 cities, towns and villages in England. I'd like to own the full set, but currently have just one - Kent - picked up cheap from a local second-hand bookshop. Question for Gordon. Is there a Scottish equivalent?
