    From the Northumberland Gazette, 25th March 2009 £½m facelift for historic castle Almost £500,000 is being spent to give a 14th century Northumberland landmark a lift. Northumberland County Council has appointed Space Facilities, part of Space Group, to carry out a number of improvements and restoration work at Ford Castle. The installation of a lift system, as well as bedroom and bathroom facilities suitable for those in a wheelchair, will make the castle facilities accessible to all.     Star Castle Ordnance Survey Map Reference SV 899106 In 1570 the Isles of Scilly were leased the islands to Francis Godolphin for a period of 38 years. Queen Elizabeth I granted the lease, terms of which were an annual rent of £20. In 1573, work was started on the fortification now known as The Garrison, but originally called "The Hugh" (pronounced "Hoo"), which means "elevated ground" or "promontory". This heavily defended headland lies on the western side of St. Mary's, almost cut off from the rest of the island.
