One of my recent acquisitions, from Grose's Antiquities of England & Wales, 1775.

This is a little known castle, which I will have to research. However, I did purchase an old postcard of it yesterday.

An old postcard of Whitton Tower (aka Witton Tower) recently purchased. Information based on details from "The Castles & Tower Houses of Northumberland" by Mike Salter. For a long time this tower was the residence of the vicars of Rothbury before it was used as a children's hospital. The lower parts were built in the 14th century but the top part is said to be the work of Alexander Cook, who was rector in the 15th century. The survey of 1541 survey refers to the presence of a barmkin. The tower itself has vaults within both the ground floor level and first floor level. Does anyone have any info on Hungerford castle? Supposedly, Walter Hungerford was a great........ grandfather and I would love some information on this castle. Thanks in advance.

From the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, 5th January 2012 Northampton’s medieval castle remains to be brought to the surface The underground remains of Northampton Castle could be brought to the surface under new proposals to regenerate a historic area of the town. Dr. Marie Dickie, a member of the Friends of Northampton Castle (FONC), believes exposing some of the remains of the medieval site would bring both social and economic benefits to the town. The castle, on Black Lion Hill, was demolished during the Victorian age, when Northampton train station was built, but excavations carried out in the 1960s uncovered intact remains underground. From the BBC Website, 29th June 2005 Lottery money to restore castle Almost £1m has been awarded to restore a 13th Century Shropshire castle to its former glory. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the Whittington Castle Preservation Trust £950,000 - but £170,000 still needs to be found for the restoration. The trust, which was set up in 1998 to try to halt the decline of the castle near Oswestry, gained a 99-year lease in 2002. It is hoped work on the Grade I listed structure will start in the autumn. The project is due to be completed next year.

King David II of Scotland was held at Ogle Castle, near Ponteland, after his defeat at Neville's Cross, in County Durham, in 1346. The nine-bedroom Grade I-listed building is owned by the Boanas family.
