If you are searching for information on a particular English castle and cannot find any details listed here, try the following procedure: 1. At the bottom of the list of topics you will probably find that the only topics listed are those for which there have been entries within the last 30 days. Click on the "down arrow" at the right-hand end of the box containing the phrase the last 30 days, click on the beginning and then Go!. 2. If you still cannot find details on the castle for which your require information, then leave a message detailing your request, and someone will endeavour to answer your enquiry as soon as possible.

From “Leeds Today”, 11th May 2005 A gift to the gods...and a godsend for museum Bronze Age sword takes centre stage in £250,000 revamp A Bronze Age sword, possibly cast away 3,000 years ago as a tribute to the Gods, has been returned to its Yorkshire home. The ancient blade is the centrepiece of an exciting new exhibition at Scarborough Castle following a £250,000 investment by English Heritage to transform the 12th century fortress into a world class tourist attraction. Many other artefacts are also being displayed for the first time in the newly-refurbished Master Gunner's House – itself a unique survivor of the post medieval period. The mass development has als…

Cromwell's Castle Ordnance Survey Map Reference SV 881159 Cromwell's Castle, being on Tresco, requires a 30 minute trip by boat from the island of St. Mary's, unless you are one of the fortunate few to fly direct by helicopter from the mainland heliport at Penzance. Now in the care of English Heritage, this castle was built in 1651-52 by Admiral Blake, and named Cromwell's Castle in honour of the Lord Protector, when the Dutch fleet threatened the newly captured islands. It superseded King Charles's Castle in the defence of New Grimsby harbour, and a large proportion of it was built using the stones from the earlier castle. Despite it's name, Oliver Cromwell never ac…

Corbridge Pele Tower Ordnance Survey Map Reference NY 988644 Corbridge Vicar’s Pele – September 2002 In the churchyard in the centre of the town lies a tower built in the 14th century as a residence for the vicar. It is one of the best preserved vicar’s pele in the country. It contains three storeys and measures 8.5m by 6.5m, with walls 1.4m thick at basement level. The wall-walk is 9.5m above the road level on the south side, but rather less on the north side facing the church. It was built using stone from the nearby Roman fort of Corstopitum, now known as Corbridge Roman Site. Corbridge Vicar’s Pele – A Vintage Postcard by J. Valentine. Par…

Probably not a "real" castle, but an interesting place nonetheless. A few modern postcards and a plan of the castle, all courtesy of the National Trust, of which I am a member. I took a couple of photos too, and hope to get these uploaded within the next few days.

I stumbled acros this website which shows lots of old pictures of Rochester Castle in Kent. The place is of enormous interest to me, as I pass the castle on the train each day going to and from work (although I must admit that on many occasions I am asleep at the time). I hope others find it fascinating too. http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query....+Images

From the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press, 3rd March 2007 Bungay castle closed for wall repairs Bungay Castle has been closed to the public due to safety concerns. A bulge has been spotted in the wall of one of the gate towers, and the public will not have access to the ancient castle until repair work can be carried out. Builders were brought in this week and put up scaffolding to inspect the problem, before recommending closure for safety reasons. Security fencing has been placed around the tower as a precaution. Mike Revell, who runs the adjoining castle visitor centre and coffee shop, said the bulge was where repair work had been done some years ago. He said: "…
