:bbfft: Georges Duby sums up the medieval political and sociological ideal: Most modern people, especially Americans, have a tendency to judge the whole world and all of history according to their ideals of democracy, rights, equality, and personal freedoms. For this reason, medieval people and their civilizations seem extremely foreign, even downright WRONG in the way they looked at the world, themselves and others. It is often difficult for modern people to understand a mindset that saw the world in terms of an objective hierarchy, and people who saw themselves and their freedom in terms of being part of this hierarchy. It is difficult for us to understand why a…

11 YR OLD SHOOTS ILLEGALS BUTTE , MONTANA Shotgun preteen vs. Illegal alien Home Invaders... Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez, 23, and Enrico Garza, 26, probably believed they would easily overpower home-alone 11-year-old Patricia Harrington after her father had left their two-story home. It seems the two crooks never learned two things: they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay-shooting champion since she was nine. Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father's room and grabbed his 12-gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun. Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor…

I'm just reading a book that mentions that the Templars fought at the battle of Bannockburn on the Scottish side, and this decided the outcome of the battle and that Edward II turned and fled the field. Has anyone read or know anymore detail about this subject ?

Battle of the Braes: last stand against the Clearances by BRENDAN O'BRIEN Skye, 1882 The last major battle on British soil led to the destruction of the Highland way of life. FOLLOWING the Jacobite’s devastating defeat at Culloden in 1746, the Highland way of life came under increasing scrutiny. The threat was at first political, as the government imposed restrictions on their cultural customs and language. However, the gravest threat was economic, and one that eventually changed the Highland landscape. After Culloden, the Highland population grew rapidly and by 1850 had increased by 50 per cent. While the Highlanders had more mouths to feed, the landlords - oft…

Bannockburn Scots under Robert the Bruce, outnumbered 3-1, won a decisive victory against Edward II's English army. Local knowledge and new Scots battle formation nullified superior English forces. English army fled in panic when local townsfolk joined the battle 23 & 24 June 1314 BRENDAN O'BRIEN Robert the Bruce fought a bloody guerrilla war against the English for 18 years after Scotland was occupied by Edward I, "Hammer of the Scots". By the time Edward I died, the Bruce had regained most of the lowlands of Scotland. In 1314, Bruce besieged the only castle south of the Forth under English control - Stirling. Sir Philip Mowbray, the English commander of…

Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem Also known as KNIGHTS OF MALTA. The most important of all the military orders, both for the extent of its area and for its duration. It is said to have existed before the Crusades and is not extinct at the present time. During this long career it has not always borne the same name. Known as Hospitallers of Jerusalem until 1309, the members were called Knights of Rhodes from 1309 till 1522, and have been called Knights of Malta since 1530. The origins of the order have given rise to learned discussions, to fictitious legends and hazardous conjectures. The unquestionable founder was one Gerald or Gerard, …

After reading many discussions about Chivalry, both on and off the internet, I’ve come to the conclusion that the concept of Chivalry is the most ambiguous, and apparently misrepresented, aspect of Medieval European history. I'm currently putting together a study on the concept of Medieval Chivalry, and any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for information and discussion covering the secular, religious, cultural and mythological sources of this concept, how it was applied as a social influence on medieval civilization, and whether this social influence was a significant one. I’m also looking, but as an aside, for any possible applicability of the concept to mode…

One of the better sources of online information in regards to medieval military history is De Re Militari; The Society for Medieval Military History, especially their online resources. Its definately worth reading through some of these online articles in your spare time. --David
