Ahhh. feels like opening a fresh ream of paper. Or, if youre a barbarian, the semi-anual bathing rite. Our castle is destined to have radiant heating. Its my understanding that it actually is rather cost effective, based on the fact that once the concrete/stone is warmed it takes very little addt'l energy to keep it warm. I havent researched it extensively, but per reports from got-connections, a slab will take a while to heat up but once done will also take a long time to cool off. Specifics most likely will be available at the con. Got connections certainly wil be there. Heating and cooling questions can be addressed. Scott drinks moat*#@er

"Beingness" is the noun-ified version of "be". What something "is" can be defined by several things. Amoung these are its physical attributes, style, overall tone, "personality" etc. There has been some confusion or curiosity as to "how" the castle will "be". (Not so much from you guys) So This section is devoted to the Flavor of our planned castle (and others). Different ages, styles, decor, overall experience for the person who would visit, etc. Also some of Cleave and mine survey work might go here. (weve begun surveying the public with some intresting results). The survey work belongs here because it has to do with what we find people want and what they e…

Cleave and I have discussed the sequence of building/establishing businesses and have concluded that the rough sequence of events is as follows: Oct 04: Convention, land survey, make business aquaintances, start legal matters, sniff around and start pots of water boiling essentially. Spring 05: Move to CT. then do these in rough sequence: Start painting business expand painting into construction concurrently do more research on land and properties get a warehouse for construction co and start accumulating tools and materiel start the manufacturing (metal, furniture, sewing etc) from that space as possible. Build the tavern Buy castle land (if not obtained already) …

This topic is a continuation of a discussion Whitemanfrtown and I have been having in the Pm's. After asking him and getting his OK, I felt it was time to move it here so the topic might help others with similar questions. Disclaimer: My area of expertise is the UK. Castles every where were built with different materials and for different reasons or needs, so types varied greatly. The ones I'll cover were influenced in their construction, as all castles were, by others else where so references to country's out side of the UK might well be made. It will take me a while to get every thing together, :laughlong: stick around I'm not sure how to answer about …

Ballytarsna Castle in Ireland offers a hands on School of Stonemasonry as an educational program at the castle it self. John's sites are scattered and a wee bit hard to find on the net but I have several of his links if some one is interested...The Wood Wrights Work Shop, Roof Beams and Placement is well worth looking at.

Every where including on the web are individuals and company's that offer construction services. Many are legit and have the credentials to prove it, but just as many are fraudulent. When looking into a individuals or company's services take the time to inquire about their policies on Insurance, taxes, permits and licenses, who does the leg work with the locale government, who or what is the back ground of their skilled craftsmen, what unions if any do they belong to, what groups or affiliations do they have with the national organizations that are construction orientated. I was surfing on the net today and ran across a site that offered building services, one of many…

Classed as grade A sand stone, meaning this stuff is HARD!! Doesn't split at all well with heat nor does it explode and imitates shrapnel as some sand stones do when fire is applied. When using the ancient methods of boring a hole, driving a wooden wedge in and lighting it, or placing hot coals and using cold water to start a break you can all most hear these stones laughing at you. We have found it easier to use a stone already in the general shape and size then to cut and shape. The stone in the image weighs well over 10 ton. It and a few around it will not be used in the walls but has a special place else where.
